BASED IN SOUTH AFRICA

ARTIST BIO

Warren Petersen is a South African painter working in oil. His practice spans three decades — from a National Diploma in Fine Art at Nelson Mandela University through graphic design, commercial illustration, graffiti, and twenty years of high-precision figurative tattooing — each discipline informing and refining a singular creative vision.

His gallery career began at 34FineArt in 2013, where he showed alongside Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Mr. Brainwash, and Esther Mahlangu — and at Graffik Gallery on London’s Portobello Road the same year.

Based in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is an inquiry into perception — a documentation of experience as it is felt rather than how it appears. I am not interested in illustration, but in translating the sensation of encountering something beyond ordinary awareness into paint.

The work explores states of consciousness: ascent through depth, the weight of conditioned thought, and the presence encountered in other living beings whose perception exceeds our own. These are not symbolic constructions, but direct experiences rendered as faithfully as possible.

Grounded in over two decades of working on the human body and sustained personal inquiry, my approach draws from the traditions of the old masters, where technical precision serves a devotional function. Mastery of medium becomes a tool — to quiet the rational mind and allow something less tangible to register.

This practice sits within a far older continuum. Encounters with ancient rock art in Southern Africa revealed a shared impulse across time: to give form to what lies beyond the visible, and to leave a trace for others to follow.
